About my cardiology practice: I developed a strong interest in equine cardiology during my residency at the University of Florida, which was further shaped through additional training at the Royal Veterinary College under Dr. Celia Marr. As part of a small community of equine veterinary specialists dedicated to cardiology, I remain committed to ongoing education. I regularly participate in advanced cardiology courses to stay current with the latest developments in the field and to continue refining my clinical skills..

I offer two types of cardiac evaluations: a Cardiac Health Program focused on wellness and prevention and a Clinical Cardiac Evaluation for horses with identified cardiac concerns (murmurs, arrhythmias)

BASIC PACKAGE

Cardiac Exam + ECG
This examination determines the presence of abnormal blood flow (murmurs) or abnormal electrical conduction (arrhythmias)

PERFORMANCE PACKAGE

Cardiac Exam + ECG

Holter monitor during exercise using the
Equimetre Device

This examination determines the heart rate at every level of exercise and identifies abnormal electrical conduction (arrhythmias) that may occur during exercise that may not be present at rest. Heart rate during exercise can be an important indicator of fitness. Understanding the heart rate “normals" for an individual horse is important for training in performance horses.

The Equimetre device also records an ECG, speed, stride length and distance. Changes in stride length and heart rate can be detected which can indicate a cardiac problem and/OR a musculoskeletal problem that may not be realized.

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PACKAGE

Cardiac Exam + ECG

Holter monitor during exercise using
the
Equimetre Device

Additional evaluations throughout the season
Multiple data points over time can help to determine level of fitness and assist with the training program while identifying any potential concerns.

Cardiac examination to detect murmurs and/or arrhythmia’s

Echocardiography – comprehensive cardiac ultrasound

  • This examines the structure and function of the heart

  • Determination of the cause of a murmur with evaluation of the valves and cardiac chamber size

  • ECG during the cardiac ultrasound

  • Determination of risk factors for safety based on the evaluation or recommendation for further diagnostics

ECG

  • ECG examination if there is an arrhythmia present

  • Exercising ECG if indicated – specialized equipment that allows for cardiac ECG during riding or longing.

  • 24-hour ECG if there is cause for concern regarding an arrhythmia
